    3Just OkayNov 08, 2010
    By J. Herron "MOMMY"
I try to keep expectations LOW for remote control vehicles because, in my experience, it's hard to find a good one. My four year old was forced to return a Tonka RC that he got for his birthday and this is what he chose.
First, his review: He's in love. He says it works and goes forward. This is true. It DOES work which was better than the Tonka. He has been playing with it alot and when he is not, it's in the little case/remote right by his side.
Here is MOM's review: I think that it is really not worth 25 bucks.
Sure it comes with 3 EXTRA BATTERIES. It takes 8 button cell batteries in all!!! I have no idea how much those cost to replace. The car is NOT at all speedy. The box boasts "HIGH SPEED SPINNING AND TURNS" and that may be the only high speed action we have seen. There is no high speed on the straight away. When we first took it from the package it would go no further than 2 feet from the controller and stop. For some reason it's range increased after a few minutes.
It's a very cute concept. He loves it and big brother WILL want one. If it were up to Mom, I probably would take it back and try again.
I have 4 boys and we will continue our search for a great R/C vehicle.

    5Very coolAug 24, 2010

Very cool...I bought it for my kid.
He carries it anywhere he goes.
It slides smoothly in his pocket - So it is simple to carry around.
Popping at a click makes its transformation from a slim shape into a full 3D car surprising.
    Driving is simple and fun.
Seems like I will need to buy more for the other kids ;-)

    2version 1.0 is never polished but it's a cool ideaFeb 16, 2011

This is a somewhat innovative toy. Unfortunately, innovation and quality are often inversely related.

Push down on the middle of the roof and the cars' sidewalls fold down with the wheels, looking like a cross between the flying version of Back to the Future car and a piece of luggage. This slides into a little case that.... doesn't seem to do anything at all in this mode.

Slide the car back out of the case, push a release on the back part of the roof and the car spring back upright as if it were inflatable. The case then becomes a four button remote control for the car.

When it's in stow mode, I can't help but think that the thing looks a bit like a wall socket or light switch cover. There's a little hole with no known purpose in the back so if you wanted, I guess you could mount them to the wall. When the car is in the case, the metal pins at the back of the car are more obvious... but they don't do anything. It made me do a double take in the case to make sure there wasn't some kind of contacts but there weren't. I haven't taken it apart so I don't know if these were an aborted rechargeable plan or just rods that are used to give the folding car a rigid structure.

Truthfully, that structure is not rigid enough. The entire thing is made so light that the slightest variation of the surface causes the vehicle to veer in that direction -- more-so than the remote control's steering can compensate. Maybe this isn't a problem if you live "up north," but down here in Texas, the ground moves depending on the temperature outside and how often you water your lawn and foundation. The best meshes of tie rods still give kitchen floors a little bit of a slant and that's enough to make this car difficult to steer. Even if you have a perfectly level foundation, it's something to consider if you hoped to use the remote controlled car on a sloped driveway, sidewalk, patio, or porch... or even on a desk.

Since it's not a rechargeable, the remote and the car are both battery operated. They're the flat watch style batteries so you won't look forward to paying for those replacements. And this is what's so kind that it's suspicious.... The car uses three of these batteries and the remote uses two more (five total). These came pre-installed but in the packaging there were three extra batteries. My guess is that they weren't getting the life they were hoping to get out of them.

This review is being written in February, 2011, but I've consulted with Nostradamus and Ronnie James Dio enough to know the future, so here it is. I bet that between now and Thanksgiving, this product gets reworked or replaced by a similar product. I bet the new version has spring tension in the front wheels and a different battery type and/or a rechargeable battery. Uncertain, the future is, but in the next version or the one after, I'd expect the car will lock into its case and that both connect to a recharging dock or attach to a cable. The case may even have a small retractable cable or mini-USB port. And then the sky will burn, a great evil will rise to power, and enemies shall become allies to face this new threat... or some other vague crap. Androids. Flying cars. Virtual Reality Headsets. But war... war never changes.

Obviously I thought the car was a cool idea. My feeling is that this version isn't really ready for the market. Pushing it in February makes me think they're floating some trial balloons while the gear up for the next holiday.

If you read all this, you're probably right where you started.... trying to decide whether the idea is cool enough to buy one even though it's an early rev. It's $25 right now and I personally find that a bit too high for an experiment, so I say wait, and my low score reflects that. Your wallet may vary.

If by chance you read all this to decide whether to get this thing as a gift that you can hand to a kid and see him play happily for a few hours, my advice is the same--wait. For a remote control car, this is a frustrating toy that isn't easily controlled. When it's not being powered, the rear wheels remain locked in gear meaning that the car cannot roll and be played with like an un-powered free rolling toy without stripping the gear. There are too many slick remote control toys on the market these days to settle and if you'd rather go the other way, this costs enough to pay for a pretty slick free rolling car.

....But keep an eye out for a new and improved version later this year and if it doesn't come out, just call me a fraud and buy your kid some Hot Wheels. He likes those better, anyway... I can sense it.

    4Battery complainers read on...Apr 05, 2011
    By Jamie46178
I searched for AG13 batteries on eBay and could find 10 packs for about .99 with free shipping - so you can get the batteries for cheap if you know where to look (I would say stock up in advance, as it appears most of the batteries ship direct from China so it will probably take a few weeks).

I loved that the batteries came already installed and that extras were included. You just open the package and can start using the car, no assembly on installation required.

I did think the price point was pretty high for what you get. I would think something like this would retail for $9.99 or $12.99. But I had a bunch of vouchers good for any Mattel item due to some recalled Fisher Price items I sent back to them, so I can't really complain.

I'm a little worried about the quality of the item, if your son was rough with it, it would be easy to break I think. Or if it was left out and accidentally stepped on, which could happen because they're so small. But I also think that Mattel is a pretty good company and would take care of you if there was a problem.

My son loves these and is so excited about them. We have only had them for a day but they seem to be working fine. I like that he can just put them in his pocket so he has something to play with wherever he goes. I also think it's a great conversation starter - if he saw another little boy he wanted to play with, he could let him use one of the RCs and they could race each other.

3Cool R/C car that fits in your pocketDec 13, 2010
    By Fleur
My son has enjoyed this R/C car. He picked up on how to use it quickly- he is 5 yrs. old. He enjoys carrying it around in his pocket. The battery life is a little longer since it is button batteries- takes a total of 5 button batteries (2 for the remote, 3 for the car). A note on button batteries- if swallowed it is considered a medical emergency- they can burn a hole through any mucosal surface so watch when changing and store the extra batteries in a safe location.
Sometimes he puts the car into the cartridge incorrectly but with a little patience I have been able to get it out without incidence. I don't think it is worth the current cost($24) but as the novelty of it wears down I'm sure the price will also.
